Q: Why ox liver cures night blindness and why cod liver oil and sunshine can help to cure rickets?

A: I can't speak to the ox, but mammalian livers are rich in vitamin A, a necessary ingredient for night vision. The ultraviolet rays in sunshine penetrate the skin for a few millimeters and lead to the body producing Vitamin D. Cod liver oil is also high in vitamin D. Lack of vitamin D in childhood leads to an abnormal growth of the ends of the bones, a condition known as rickets.

Q: anxiously awaiting celiac and rickets test?
My two year old daughter is quite underweight and has even been loosing weight. Now we are waiting for test results on celiac sprue and rickets. I am very anxious. Anyone know how soon she should recover if she has celiac? I already have a daughter with multiple food allergies (not wheat). How will I be able to feed them and avoid milk, eggs, nuts and now wheat too?

A: You've obtained an excellent answer from " gluetenfreegirl". Great response. I agree with everything she has written. I am gluten intolerant and, unfortunately, one can only change one's diet to live with the auto-immune disease. I can only say its incredibly important to stick to the diet if your daughter proves to be a celiac. If you don't, her symptoms and condition will get worse. I wandered from my gluten-free diet while staying in a hotel this weekend (because I couldn't fly out of an airport and was forced to stay overnight in the hotel).....and I was very very uncomfortable with severe gas and irregular stools for days. Bad news. Make sure your whole family and friends and relatives understand the importance of a gluten-free diet!!!! Lots of people think people who say they have "food alllergies" are just thinking and acting neurotic about food. Good luck and my sympathies!

Q: if you walk funny do you have rickets?
some ppl walk like theres a dick up their butts..is it rickets?wat is rickets and how do walk if you have it?and how can u cure rickets without going to the doctors?

A: Rickets is a softening of the bones in children potentially leading to fractures and deformity. The predominant cause is a vitamin D deficiency, but lack of adequate calcium in the diet may also lead to rickets. Although it can occur in adults, the majority of cases occur in children suffering from severe malnutrition, usually resulting from famine or starvation during the early stages of childhood. Treatment involves increasing dietary intake of calcium, phosphates and vitamin D. Exposure to ultraviolet in sunshine, cod liver oil, halibut-liver oil, and viosterol are all sources of vitamin D. Many issues can cause posture & gait deformities, but rickets can be one of the possible causes due to the affect it has on the shape of the patient's legs resulting from malnutrition.

A: theoritically this absolutely true but practically i didnot see or hear about even one case like that

Q: how can unbalanced cause the rickets and anaemia?
im doing this course work its about anaemia and rickets, and the question is describe how unbalanced diets can result in the development of the two identified medical condition (anaemia, rickets) 1.) why the diet is likely to be deficient in the nutrient ie why is someone not having nutrient? 2.) who is likely to be deficient in this nutrient ie the vulnerable groups, and why they are at the risk of deficiency?

A: Iron deficiency causes anaemia. This is common in women as blood is lost during menstruation, and can also occur due to blood loss for other reasons and diseases in which nutrients are poorly absorbed. People at risk include vegetarians who don't get much iron, alcoholics who don't eat much of anything, and people in developing countries who have very poor diets. Anaemia can also occur unrelated to diet and iron intake, as a result of many medical conditions. Rickets is due to a lack of vitamin D. People at risk, again, include people who cannot absorb nutrients, alcoholics and very poor people, who have bad diets, bad living conditions and don't see much sunlight.

Q: What is good to Take for RICKETS and MUSCLE SPASMS?
What vitimans and minerals are good to take for this. Or Diet? Any ideas. Does anyone have this disease? What has worked for you?

A: The spasms and the rickets are both caused by inadequate calcium, and that is caused by not enough vitamin D. Get a bunch of sunshine. 15minutes of sunshine on 50% of your body will produce over 10,000IU of D. Or get some supplemental D, and take a bunch. You can take 10,000IU a day for a month with no danger. A doc can prescribe 100,000IU supps.

Q: Rickets?????
What does this word remind you of??? It reminds me of a completely dark room with nothing but a skeleton being made to dance by an invisible string, making loads of rickety noises with the bones all colliding with each other. Lolz. What about you???

A: Hi, I know what wicket's are and I know what Pickets are and I even know what Tickets are and I know what brickets are and alright I know what Rickets are as well, bet you think I'm thicket's don't you. Heee heee Hope this help's Dr K.I.A.

Q: How would you come up with a solution to a growing rickets problem for a small city, what would you recommend?
Rickets is a bone disease. How would your approach be different in Texas verse Maine? Please only those who want to help!

A: In both areas I would develop programs to ensure that small children get milk fortified with vitamin D. Day-care centers and pre-schools need special attention, then children in the primary grades. Fresh air and sunshine, OK, especially the sunshine, should be encouraged. We argue a lot about vitamin D supplementation in infants of nursing mothers. In cloudy, cold climes, I would recommend it. I would think the problem would be worse in Maine with its long relatively sunless winter.
