Q: Obesity???
Hi! I was wondering why obesity is the number one problem with americas youth. Is it just the junk foods; Doritos, Snickers, etc. So what is your opinion on obesity? And why d people constantly put theirselves down for being "fat?"

A: I think young people get "down" and eat to feel better. Then they develop these problems. It is also lack of exercise. With T.V., texting, and internet, teens and kids aren't exercising as much as in past decades. Teens, especially girls, are very self concious, and will put themselves down for things.

Q: When did people start to realized that obesity is spreading throughout the world?
I am doing a research paper on worldwide obesity. And one question that I have to answer in my paper is when did this issue come up? I know when it became a public problem in the United States but does anyone know when obesity came into the public attention worldwide in general? Thank you.

A: Obesity around the world follows directly from the spreading of the American culture. Follow the McDonalds...and you will have your answer, :)

Q: What are some ways to decrease obesity in children?
If you notice, more and more children are becoming obese. In fact, children are expected to live five years less than their parents because of obesity. In fact, a stunning 17% of kids aged 2-19 years old in the USA are obese. What are some ways to implement change in nations where there are fast food chains on every block? Should a really abuse child be concidered as 'neglected'? I meant should obesity in children be concidered neglect.

A: I don't think obesity in a child should be considered neglect on the part of the parents. I'm not trying to say obesity is a wonderful thing or parents don't have a responsibility to their children. Maybe these parents make bad choices for their kids in letting them become obese---parents make bad choices all the time---but a mistake isn't necessarily a crime. I'd be inerested to see how many of the 17% (a stat I'm hesitant to accept unconditionally) have parents who are obese as well. As far as what people can do when "there are fast food chains on every block" (not to mention processed food for sale in supermarkets) is to be more aware of the food that they buy. Do things like check the nutritional content on the back of the items---how many calories of fat, how much is trans. fat, how much sodium etc. Also, stop buying stuff like soda, junk food---or, like my parents did, just buy one dessert or other snack while everything else is healthy. Finally--and this can be a bit difficult when people are always working---COOK YOUR OWN FOOD. At least then you'll know what goes into what you and your kids are eating

Q: How does structural functionalism relate to childhood obesity?
I know what structural functionalism is, but I can't figure out how it relates to childhood obesity. Thanks alot for your help!

A: are you looking for explanations that might come from structural functionalists? If you are, i like to think of it as a bit of a guessing game, as you can sort of spin a lot of the potential explanations assuming you dont have to do any large scale research to back it up. If i was to hazard an explanation from that perspective i would say increases in the definition and application of medical labels such as childhood obesity help to supplement and augment a growing biomedical field which will be one of the essential sectors of the economy going forward. It therefore makes sense to use childhood obesity specifically, because the sooner that an individual can be integrated into the system, the more controlled the relationship between the individual and the medical system will be.

Q: What is the correlation between diabetes and obesity?
It has been obsereved that Diabetes occurs in people suffering from obesity. There should be some correlation between the two. This may be due to some physioloic, genetic, immunologic or some other factor. As a student of biotechnology,i wanted to know the precise relation between them and the mechanism by which they affect each other.I would also be thankful if some good websites for exploration of this topic are suggested.

A: if you eat too much food you get fat and then get all kinds of medical problems that taxpayers have to pay for stop eating so much fatsos

Q: What is the largest charity associated with Childhood Obesity?
I've recently come into a good deal of money and wanted to donate a portion of it into the following categories, as I find them to be very important: 1) Childhood Obesity 2) Breast Cancer 3) Heart Disease 4) Rain Forest If anyone can supply information for these categories, I'd be very grateful. I have already checked out a few places, but I want to see if I missed anything. Thank you.

A: Great question! Always look for local charities and grassroots organizations that have fewer ties with corporate business. For example, American Heart Association gets lots of money from big business and rich doctors who make millions from expensive heart surguries that people may not even need...

Q: What do you think of the normalization of obesity?
For example, celebrities such as Orah and Monique routinely declare that fat is beautiful, and that thin people are unhealthy and unrealistic. It's funny how criticism of skinny girls is perfectly OK and politically correct, but if you mention 1 word about obese women, you are Satan incarnate. Why are the feelings and insecurities of thin girls less valuable than obese girls? Anyway. Do you think reframing obesity as a positive, healthy thing is a good idea?

A: No, obesity is not a healthy idea. It is attractive to many people and by no means makes a person bad or stupid, but it is unhealthy. Being an obese person myself, I have thought a lot about this. Flavor is addictive. Foods that taste good are very addictive, Just think of kids and candy, If allowed, they will eat it all day everyday. When we get older our tastes change, we want a more mature flavor, but that addiction is still there, just in a different form. Americas economic success inevitably brought about the ready availability of rich, tasty foods. And they are available to us at any time of any day. This makes it feel like a sacrifice to go on a diet and/or eat healthy. But what do we do? We can't just shut down all these major food companies and farmers and historic food developments by stopping them from being produced, thats just not realistic. I'm sure our forefathers imagined the feasts and evolution of the American quisine, but they could not even imagine how rampant the obesity and poor health would overwhelm us. And even if they did, they surely would not have known what to do whilst still upholding human freedom. Its an inevitability of any truly successful civilization. Education is the only way to fix this. We can't just make people be healthy, we have to convince them to want to be healthy more than they want to eat good food. I'm still waiting to be convinced myself. Education is the only redemption for our country, and I don't mean standard school education, I mean basic everyday common sense education, this is where we are lacking.

Q: How did obesity become a serious problem in America?
And if you believe obesity is not a problem, then please tell me how.

A: Because of everything has sugar added to it, or is made of white flour (all the nutrients are bleached out of it) Plus America's gluttony is the number one cause of that problem

Q: How is childhood obesity relevant to college aged people ?
I'm giving a speech on childhood obesity and have to say why it is relevant to my audience, which is college students.

A: If they ever had an overweight family member or they themself had weight struggles growing up. Also if they want to or already have children. It is their job as parents to keep their children healthy with a healthy diet that is nutritious (no junk food) and regular exercise. So that it could become habit that way they would become used to eating that way.

Q: What is the current situation regarding obesity among young people in the UK?
What are the best health promotion models in tackling obesity in young people? What is the most generally acceptable measure of obesity in young people?

A: I haven't noticed a huge increase in obese children.Sounds like another government scam.Stand by for extra taxes on sweets and chocolate.

Q: Obesity going to lead to the extinction and the DE evolution of the human race?
With all the facts recorded on the number of diseases associated with obesity, and the theories of everyone being overweight in such a short time, wouldn't that logically mean that everyone will become less healthy furthermore dropping the life expectancy of the human race?

A: Perhaps the alleged"fat gene" will become less pervasive if a disproportionate number of the morbidly obese pass at a young age,

Q: What do you think causes childhood obesity?
I am taking a nutrition class for my early childhood education degree and childhood obesity is the topic I chose to write my research paper on. I would like to get some input on how you all feel about the subject. This will help in my project. No names or user id's will be used in any part of this project. Websites to visit are appreciated. Thank you.

A: Weight gain or loss is the balance between food energy input and exercise energy output. The government health department offers this insight - "Time trends show a decline in physical activity, but no significant increase in the number of calories consumed." So maybe eating too much is not the main cause, and a lack of physical output is. TV and video games have been blamed, but the studies have looked into this and TV is not to blame. "video game play, but not television use, is indeed displacing the time children spend in more physically demanding pursuits." (see source) Video games then? Well the US state with the heaviest kids has 19% playing 4+ hours, and the state with the leanest youngsters - 3.5%. It does not mean it is a cause, just well correlated. Could it be changes in not calorie intake, but changes to nutirtion? Maybe the food is less easily burned off and more easily stored? Let us know the findings of your paper!!

Q: Can excessive masturbation may lead to obesity or kidney problems ?
Few people are addicted to exessive masturbation. Say around twice or thrice a day. Can Excessive masturbation may lead to obesity or kidney stone or any other probelms ?

A: How much masturbation are you talking about ? If you don't get up off your butt from staring at the porn online you might get a little larger. Kidney problems ?? No don't be ridiculous.

Q: How do conservatives and liberals views differ on childhood obesity?
I am writing a paper on childhood obesity and have to find 4 main groups who are arguing about the issues of what causes childhood obesity and how to best fix it. anything will help thanks :]

A: Most Conservatives are involved with their children which means they always make dinner, when I say make dinner, I mean something other than "Give me two happy meals with chocolate shakes, please" We really cook, therefore most of our children are not obese.

Q: What should a country do to lower obesity rates?
If a country has increasing rates of obesity and people being overweight, what should the government do to try to help their population get healthier?

A: Place taxes on unhealthy foods. Things like fast food, soda, and dessert foods should be taxed heavily so people learn to see them as an occasional luxury item rather than as an everyday thing to eat. The money earned from the tax revenue can be used to help lower the prices of some healthier foods in poorer areas. This would also have the added benefit of lowering health care costs, since overweight people are among the most expensive to insure.
