Q: Is sulfur water good or ok or will it harm goldfish?
I am getting a goldfish and I have sulfur water, now i think that it's just the gas from the sulfur and not the actual sulfur. And I was wondering will it harm my goldfish.

A: You should be ok, goldfish are not a very delicate fish, and should be fine in the water. Here is a little bit of info that I have read when doing a little reasearch for you, I'll leave the link where I got it at the bottom. Well water should be tested to be sure it is free of pathogens, and to know to what extent mineralization is present in the water. Well water from underground aquifers can be high in toxic minerals such as arsenic, which is becoming more prevalent in well water as the level of aquifers is lowered. Well water can also pick up toxic organics from farm land if these are nearby. Since well water is passing through pipes, if there are any metallic pipes or fittings, such as bronze, brass, copper, lead, zinc, iron, or other heavy metal involved, a remover of such metals should be used. Kordon's NovAqua+ is recommended for this purpose, which also takes out other heavy metals as well, including arsenic. If there are pathogens present, the use of an effective ultraviolet sterilizer is recommended. UV Sterilizers kill microscopic organisms that are free floating in the water, which are passed by the UV light bulb by a water pump. In much of aquarium and pond keeping these are not needed. However, if there are free-floating bacteria, viruses, algae, or free-swimming protozoans in the water that are of harm to the fishes, this is a beneficial treatment of water that has no adverse side effects for fishes, invertebrates, and plants. Note that nothing is said about sulfer in the well water, which makes me think that your fine, you just have to worry about the heavy metals. If you really worried about it, you could get a type of water purifier that attaches to your tap, or they even sell reverse osmosis setups for your home. Hope this is of some help, and I wish you luck with your fish. Link for this info. http://www.novalek.com/kordon/articles/water_sources.html

Q: What is this sulfur smell in my house and should I be worried?
I have a sulfur smell in a few parts of my home and I'm trying to figure out where its coming from. This is the 2nd or 3rd time that this has happened-always in the spring. My tap water smells fine-when run both hot & cold. I don't have a water softener. I have a septic tank (which is regularly serviced) on my property but not a well, as we're obtain water from a community water supply company. I have oil heat - baseboard, forced-hot water. Since this seems to happen around the same time each year when the weather warms up and the snow melts, and the smell dissipates on its own, could it be caused by standing water around the outside of my home? This sulfur stench really worries me. Any suggestions on how to figure out the source and how to fix it would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

A: You may have "dry drains".Pour Water in all of your floor drains and that should take care of it. If the drains are dry it would let gas, in your case, gas from your septic system come up into the house.

Q: How do I get sulfur out of my laundry?
My husband works for a CO2 plant, and deals with Sulfur all of the time. We made the mistake of washing his work clothes in our washer and dryer, and now it is makeing all of the other loads of laundry smell like sulfur. I have tried OxiClean, and even bleach for my whites, but it still won't come out. Does anyone have any solutions? or even any more suggestions?

A: Activated charcoal should remove the odor. Fill the tub, add the charcoal (with no clothes in washer) and put it through a wash and spin cycle. Restart to wash cycle, (still no clothes added) put in regular detergent and strong bleach, then run the full cycle. You can use a short cycle for this. Activated charcoal should be available in Aquarium shops or in Garden centers.

Q: How do you remove sulfur smell from clothing?
I worked in a fertilizing plant and was around sulfur alot. Now it is in my clothes. Washing doesn't seem to help. Hanging out side for days helped alittle.

A: my husband worked at a farm supply store so i know how that goes. there is this orange hand cleaner you can by any were put about a 1/2 cup in the wash and 1 cup baking soda let it sit for 30 minutes then let the wash finish then add 3 cups vinegar and wash again this should do the trick you will need to rinse a couple of times but the smell will begone

Q: How do I calculate the mass of sulfur that can be recovered from 488g of ammonium sulfate?
The fertilizer, ammonium sulfate, is 21.2% nitrogen is 6.1% hydrogen , 24.2% sulfur and 48.5% oxygen by mass. What is the mass of sulfur that can be recovred from 488g of ammonium sulfate.

A: 0.242*488 = 118 g

Q: How could sulfur be getting into my house?
I moved in 5 yrs ago & had new Trane ac unit installed. It went through 3 coils & I was told it could possibly be sulfur. This May I had a whole new unit (Trane also) installed, & already the coil in it has gone bad. The company keeps insisting its sulfur, but how is it getting in my house. Is there a way to detect it & find out where its coming from?

A: Sulfur, in large concentrations, smells somewhat like rotten eggs. For sulfur to attack and ruin the coils of an AC it seems to me the concentration would have to be very large indeed. I would ask them to prove it was sulphur by doing air quality tests. I really feel you'd notice the sulphur smell (it's quite obnoxious) if it were strong enough to be the culprit.

Q: What is the relationship between sulfur oxides and the atmosphere?
What can sulfur oxides cause in the atmosphere?(Including advantages and disadvantages) Maybe it is related to acid rain, greenhouse effect and photochemical gases.

A: sulfur oxides or rather sulfur dioxide which is the most common is a highly poisonous gas which in high levels can cause major respiratory problems also it can cause acid rain by combing with oxygen and water vapor in the air to form sulfuric acid.it is known to greatly increase the acidity of rain water.sulfur dioxide is not a very factor in the greenhouse effect. other sulfur oxides are not formed under ordinary conditions. SO is formed by sonoluminescence of sulfuric acid. SO3 is formed by various reactions of SO2 in the atmosphere and dissolves instantly to form sulfuric acid.

Q: How do you get thye sulfur and the smell out of your clothes once you have come into contact with it?
when i washed my clothes after dusting my yard with sulfur the smell didn't come out it justed spread to other clothes any help?

A: Put a cup of vinegar in the final rinse.=)

Q: What is the reason for adding sulfur dioxide to wines?
I have noticed that quite often wine labels read "minimal sulfur dioxide added". What is the reasoning for this? I don't drink wine, but often my dinner guests arrive with a bottle.

A: Sulphur Dioxide (SO2) is one of the most important additives used at all stages of wine production. SO2 (sulphur dioxide) reduces grape juice and wine oxidation.. SO2 inhibits the growth and activity of microorganisms. in juice and wine. SO2 acts as a solvent, able to assist in the extraction of red colour pigments. present in the skins of red grapes SO2 can be used as a mild antiseptic agent .

Q: Why does my water smell like sulfur and how do I eliminate the problem?
OK, first of all here's my raw water quality: 350TDS, 1.4ppm Iron, 20 grains hardness, no sulfur. Now, softened water quality: 375TDS, 0ppm Iron, 0 grains hardness, unknown sulfur quantity. Private well. Inline sediment filter installed. Hot water heater is about 140 degrees and anode rod is removed. Toilet bowls acquire a thin, orangish slime over a period of about 2 weeks. Inside of toilet tanks can sometimes coated with black or dark gray slime. Cold, softened water smells like eggs. Hot water is hard to tell, though may be slightly detectable. No iron stains on fixtures or corrosion. I've shocked chlorinated entire system. Only helped temporarily. Sulfur test done by technician on raw water. I will try for softened water also. Any ideas and what to do about it? Thanks for any help!

A: You might need a new anode rod in the water heater, but that would only affect the hot water. You will need to install an iron ox. Looks just like a water softener without the extra salt tank on the side of it.

Q: Why do I get a horrible sulfur smell when soaking my laundry?
Whenever I use the "soak" feature on my washing machine, which I often do due to having toddlers, I get a horrible sulfur smell that permeates the house. We're on city water, so it isn't a well. Our water tastes fine, and this is the only time I encounter the smell. Our water heater is new, so I seriously doubt it's the rod in that. I use liquid Tide. Any one know what's going on here?

A: it's because you have a lot of sulfur in water. when you drink the water your not using as much as you are soaking clothes you need to add something to laundry water to drown out the smell...

Q: How is sulfur mined and processed, and what are 3 environmental impacts associated with mining this mineral?
How is sulfur mined and processed, and what are 3 environmental impacts associated with mining this mineral? I can't ask online for some details regarding my homework? Those are only two questions on it, I did the whole entire thing but that.

A: Sulphur (or sulfur) is mined from it's pure mineral form underground. Very hot, pressurised water is pumped underground, which melts the sulphur. This molten sulphur is carried along with the water up to the surface, separated and allowed to cool. Sulphur is also extracted as a by-product from petroleum. There really is no environmental effect, aside from the energy needed to heat and pump the water.

Q: How do I get the smell of sulfur out of my sink?
I guess some food is rotting in there or something because a stench of sulfur is eminating from the sink. Any ideas how to clear up the problem?

A: Baking soda. I often just shake some down the drain, add a bit of cheap white vinegar and let it do it's job. Then I follow with a few pots of boiling hot water. Sounds to me like your drain needs a good flushing out. Baking Soda is your first, best step. Its cheap and it works. Why else would we keep it in the fridge to kill odors???? After that, a good drain cleaner once in a while might help. And keep the strainer in your sink and don't let food bits get down there.

Q: How does the sulfur in some acne products actually help clear acne?
I have 2 acne treatments (Proactiv Refining Mask & another drying gel) that have sulfur as the main ingredient. They smell horrible, but they really work well! I was wondering what it actually does? Does it clear the pores or does it kill the acne bacteria? No big emergency, just wondering! Thanks!

A: it kills the bacteria by drying it up
