Q: Acidophilus?
My 3-year-old's pediatrician would like him to eat yogurt for the acidophilus to help with digestion issues. (You don't need the details--trust me!) However, he does not like yogurt (nor ice-cream, nor anything with that type of texture).
Any idea what other foods, especially those that a toddler would like, that have acidophilus in them?
Thanks!
A: Milk has a good bit of acidophilus, in fact it was a selling point for a dairy in the southest. Have you attempted to disquise the yogurt or ice cream... Making a dish he does like with the yogurt in it? Good luck...never knew a kid that didn't like ice cream though..gotta be tough...
Q: What kind of acidophilus should I take for thrush?
I'm breastfeeding, and think I might have thrush. I don't have all the symptoms, but my nipples really hurt when I nurse. I don't have shooting pain in my breasts, and the pain doesn't last once I stop nursing. But when I nurse it feels like baby has razors in her mouth. I feel great relief when I stop.
I don't think it's improper latch. She's 9months , so I think by now she knows how to latch properly.
I thought of using gentian violet and acidophilus. Is it okay to take lactobacilus acidophilus if you can't drink milk? If not what else can I take?
And also, can I use gentian violet? Will it stain my baby's teeth?
A: If you are lactose intolerant, lactobacillus acidophillus is very good for you, as it helps to break down lactose (milk sugars) by producing the enzyme lactase, which lactose intolerant individuals do not produce.
Have a look at this link for lactobacillus acidophillus.

Q: how much acidophilus is there in a cup of yogurt?
I sometimes take an acidophilus suppliment, and it is usually 2 billion active cultures. How does this compare to eating a cup of yogurt?
A: hey there...
it took me a while to look up your answer, and i came up with some results that may interest you. if they dont, sorry, but hopefully they will. heres what i could stir up:
lots of acidophilus can be found in milk, dairy, fish, grain and meat...this covers a lot of food groups, so unless you are vegetarian then you dont really have a lot to worry about.
in yoghurt, there are two co-cultered latic acid bacteria, that help for health and taste. i also read that it makes up 15% of the yoghurt, but it wasnt a very reliable source. since you need milk to make yoghurt, and milk has a lot of it, then there is proberbly enough that you do not need to take suppliments. for health reasons tho, i dont think it would hurt to continue.
hope this helps!
good luck!
Q: What brand of lactobacillus acidophilus should i take for bacterial vaginosis?
I heard if I took lactobacillus acidophilus it would help clear up a bacterial infection. Ive had BV before but it seems to be a re-occuring thing all of a sudden. I was wondering if there was a certain brand or product that would work best. Any suggestions?
A: well i used to get them from the store but i kept getting infections. so i went to stronger pills with more strains. it works great. so go to a health food store. they are better. other good herbal remedies are colidal silver and tea tree oil.
Q: Acidophilus - How many units are beneficial for yeast control?
Does anyone at all know what Acidophilus I should get that might help a dog with chronic yeast infections? We have exhausted all other vet treatments and feel as though we threw our $$ away. All the products I see online have certain amount of units of the bacteria and I don't know what would be effective and not effective. Some are 1 million units, others are 6 million units etc. HELP!
A: I love using acidophilus with my dogs. Even though they get top-of-the-line food, since they are older, they are prone to digestive problems and not being able to assimilate food well. I have found that acidophilus helps tremendously.
Most of the brands in the health food store are in the mega-units, specific to human adults. Since my dogs are small, I use the liquid drops and capsules that are designed for babies and children. You didn't mention how big your dog was but, like humans, you can go by body weight. I think your best bet is to find a holistic vet (even online - Dr. Marty Goldstein in New York) to ask as well.
The article in the source section will give you an idea how to deal nutritionally with pet yeast infections and the use of pro-biotics, as well as including a couple of yummy recipes to help your dog get well.
Good luck and all the best!
Q: Where can I get Acidophilus milk and what kind of grains is acidophilus found in?
I was just wondering what stores sell Acidophilus milk and what grains acidophilus is found in since I read an article on wiki that stated that acidophilus was found in grains.
A: as far as I know Acidophilus doesn't come in a milk form and isn't in grains. You can get Acidophilus capsules that seperate to give you a powder that you can mix in to milk, coffee, tea, yogart or anything else you feel like mixing it in to. Also yogart has Acidophilus in it. You should take Acidophilus regularly to keep your system in properly working order.
Q: For how long will acidophilus survive outside of the refrigerator?
Hey everyone, I'm supposed to take acidophilus but it's very inconvenient since I'm always on the go. I'm wondering whether I can carry it in my purse for a few hours.
A: It can vary from brand to brand. There are some that are designed so that they don't have to stay in the fridge. To find out which ones try contacting a local health food store as well to see what they say.
Q: Can acidophilus capsules be placed in the Vagina for a yeast infection?
I heard by orally taking acidophilus 2 times daily it can cure a yeaste infection and vaginal bacterial infection. But I also heard inserting acidophilus capsules, it also does the same job but better. Does acidophilus really work as people say?
A: Taking acidophilus helps replenish the good bacteria so you get back into balance. I wouldn't necessarily try it topically, in the vagina to battle yeast, though it probably wouldn't hurt.
A good way to battle vaginal yeast is to use a grapefruit seed extract douche - (grapeFRUIT not grape, common mistake) Use liquid GSE, 10 drops to 6 oz of water. Use it as any other douche. Depending on the severity, you may want to wait several hours and douche again, or you may get instant relief. If bad, to start, I may do twice a day, but cut back to 1 per day as yeast problem diminishes. When gone, stop all together.
Adding probiotics to your diet, as well as enzymes will help keep your bacteria in balance and yeast at bay.
A good source for probiotics, enzymes and GSE is http://www.iherb.com (not affiliated, just where I get mine). They are cheaper than health food stores and have very good service.
EDIT: If taking GSE internally for yeast, take it 2 hours away from any probiotics as it will kill good and bad bacteria, not just bad.

Q: When taking lactobacillus acidophilus for bacterial vaginosis, how long does it take to take effect?
I just started taking lactobacillus acidophilus yesterday because I'm starting to get the smell for bacterial vaginosis. How long does it take for it to take effect? And also I've heard of lactobacillus acidophilus suppositories...can anyone tell me where I can get those and does it take effect faster than the capsules?
A: I had a pretty severe case of BV that would not go away. I tried creams, antibiotics, even boric acid vaginal suppositories for two weeks. I tried acidophilus vaginally, but not for long. If you buy the kind in capsules, you can just use those, it doesn't have to be a special kind, but I don't know if it will work. I came across some information online about taking folic acid (orally) and how it was a cure for BV. I thought it was stupid and a long shot, but I was desperate, so I tried it. I have not itched AT ALL since I took the first folic acid supplement. I am taking 800mg twice a day and so far, so good. I REALLY didn't think this would work, but I am happy to say that IT DID!!!!!!! And from my research it seems that taking the daily recommended amount will prevent BV from returning. Good luck, I know this is awful!
Q: Is it possible to take too much acidophilus supplement and get a bacterial infection as a result??
I began taking an acidophilus/probiotic supplement from Trader Joe's and after a month or so developed a bacterial infection. I know that the supplement is good for fending off yeast infections but what is the supplements relation to bacterial infections? Could an overgrowth of good bacteria cause a bacterial infection?
A: That's interesting reasoning you have there. I'm sorry I don't know the answer but I hope to see you get a good one. My guess is that you can get a bacterial infection despite taking acidophilous or else maybe you already had one and it took time to show because of the acidopholis. Ahh... that's 3 different spellings we have for acidophilous now. Hope one of us is right. No wonder they call it probiotic. A bit easier to remember the spelling.Sorry I don't have a good answer for you.
I'm going to try to check this out because I want to know more about probiotics too. If i learn anything I'll get back to you later.
Q: Can I take Lactobacillus acidophilus and evening primrose at the same time with my prescriptions?
I take Pentasa and Azathioprine for my Chron's Disease, but I want to take acidophilus and evening primrose as well to help in a more natural way and eventually to not take prescriptions at all. Can I take all these pills at the same time or will it cause a bad reaction?
A: Both of these should not be a problem to take with your medication - you should definitely monitor your intake of the primrose oil as too much can cause abdominal pain or headache. See below for info
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/evening-primrose-oil/NS_patient-Primrose
Although as mentioned previously you should speak to someone educated in the field RHNC/RNC/naturopath etc. to help you get on a program to help you with the Chron's disease naturally. A pharmacist may/may not be able to answer your question correctly; pharmacists go to school to learn about drugs not nutritional supplements.

Q: How often should you take acidophilus?
I have been on antibiotics and using acidophilus how often should I take it?
A: I think you should take it every day. I read once that you should take it in the evening, on an empty stomach, and with lots of fiber such as ground flax and psyllium husk so that it gets carried past your stomach and into your intestines, otherwise your stomach acids will break down the capsules and kill the good bacteria. However, the bottle I just bought from DrMercola.com says to take it two to three times a day before meals.
I would be really curious to hear an expert's opinion (although I believe that Dr. Mercola is a pretty good expert!), especially someone who has experience and has tested the results. For instance, the lady who does live blood cell analysis at my naturopath's office says that she can see a big difference in the blood of people who take the Pearl brand of acidophilus.
Q: Can acidophilus geltabs be placed in the Vagina for a yeast infection?
I have a yeast infection, which I bought clotrimazole 3 day treatment for. I finished the treatment, but still have some itching and burning in my vaginal area. I have tried the vinegar treatment, but it doesnt seem to work. I have been taking acidophilus supplements to help combat the problem, and it seems I read somewhere that these geltabs can be placed in the vagina. Is this possible?
A: Yes, there are acidophilus suppositories for the vagina.

Q: How long should I keep taking acidophilus?
I take four acidophilus tabs daily. How long should I remain on this regimen?
A: If I am correct, I believe that is the supplement you take for natural bacteria in your intestines. If your digestive system seems to be working okay with no unpleasant feelings, you probably do not have to take these tablets every day. Usually you get problems with your intestinal bacteria when you take certain anti-biotics that kill them off, or certain foods or diseases. As a general rule, for normal people without illnesses, you can tell that your intestinal bacteria are not working properly when you get diehrea. Other good foods to compliment your supplement with or take rather than your supplement include things like sour cream, yogurt, and certain cheeses.
